Serving and Supporting Letterkenny General Hospital

The Friends of Letterkenny General Hospital was founded in in 1992, by Mr. Pat Harvey, then Hospital Administrator and Mr. Noel O’Connell, who is the Chairperson at present.

This voluntary organisation, which was granted charitable status in 1995, has been responsible for raising in excess of €4.3 million from membership fees, donations, church gate collections and various fund-raisng events, which has enabled Hospital Management purchase equipment that , otherwise would not be provided for from the normal Health Budget.

Under the Chairmanship of Mr. Noel O’Connell , this Voluntary Organisation is made up  of a central committee & local sub-committees from all over County Donegal and has two Primary Objectives:

  • Fund-Raising for  Equipment & facilities for the  hospitals
  • Voluntary work

New Members are always welcome and any groups or individuals who wish to fund-raise on behalf of the “Friends” are asked to contact us direct.

We would also like to hear from groups who have raised funds for the “Friends” in the past.

One of our current goal’s  is to raise €750,000 towards the provision of an Angiogram (Cardiac) Suite  at Letterkenny General Hospital. ( Angiography is a special x-ray of the coronary arteries of the heart to detect coronary artery disease).

The ‘Friends’ have  recently donated in excess of €750,000 towards a new Psychiatric Unit at Letterkenny General Hospital and construction work has now commenced on the Unit.

Finally, the Friends of Letterkenny Hospitals would like to thank Mr. Michael Mc Cole ( Asst PRO) for his energetic work on behalf of  the organisation since its inception in 1992.
