PROPOSAL FOR AN ON-SITE ANGIOGRAPHY SUITE

The current venture the ‘Friends’ are involved in is the provision of an on-site Angiography Suite at Letterkenny General Hospital.

A cardiologist performs this test and an angiogram is required to access the severity of stenosis or narrowing of the arteries before contemplating further treatment, which is the insertion of a sleeve or ’stint’ to othe narrowing or blocking of the arteries.

One of the leading causes of death in Ireland today is cardiac related.

By having a stand-alone unit , we would have facilities to improve angiplasty locally. The Cath Lab is also  used  for other interventional procedures such as:

• Permanent pacemaker insertion
• Defibrillator insertion
• Electrical studies to access the abnormal heart rate.

If the Friends provide this necessary equipment, it will eliminate patients having to travel to Dublin or Sligo for investigation or treatment.

Currently, approximately fifty patients travel per month for this treatmen ata significant cost to the Health service and particularly the Ambulanace Service.

The provision of this equipment by the Friends will have a marked improvement in the life of so many people in Donegal.
